Germany's EnBW sees big role for Turkey in 5GW wind plans

EnBW currently operates just 160MW of wind capacity, including Baltic 1

Germany’s third-largest energy utility EnBW says it will build nearly 5GW of wind capacity over the next two decades – much of it in Turkey – to counteract the nuclear phase-out at home.

However, just 500MW or so of that capacity will be online before 2020, with the lion’s share to be built during the following decade.

Like its larger rivals E.ON and RWE, EnBW has been hard hit by Germany’s post-Fukushima decision to abandon nuclear power by 2022.

In 2010 EnBW’s four nuclear plants generated just under one-third of its electricity. Since then it has been forced to shut down two of the plants, and the working lives of the other two have been shortened.
