At
a
time
when
the
big
players
built
up
global
manufacturing
footprints,
Enercon
pulled
out
of
the
US
because
of
a
patent
dispute,
alleging
a
global
espionage
plot,
and
it
has
stayed
out
of
China.
It
has
also
spurned
the
burgeoning
offshore
segment,
while
competitors
have
invested
heavily
in
capital-guzzling
new
turbines.
There
are
two
reasons
why
Enercon
has
been
able
to
behave
in
this
way.
First,
the
company
is
privately
owned
by
German
electrical
engineer
Aloys
Wobben.
Second,
it
is
dominant
in
Germany,
one
of
the
most
consistent
growth
markets
for
