UK claims FIT reforms will spur 22GW of solar by decade's end

The UK government has unveiled planned changes to renewable support that it claims would set the nation on course for 22GW of solar capacity by the end of the decade.

The ambitious target – more than 20 times the current installed capacity – was flagged up by climate change minister Greg Barker as he proposed revisions to feed-in tariffs for PV, small-scale wind and other small renewables.

As expected, the UK is proposing a German-style mechanism that pegs FIT reductions to growth in capacity and declines in system costs via six-monthly reviews.
