Davey takes over as UK Energy Secretary after Huhne quits

New UK Energy Secretary Ed Davey

Update: The UK renewables sector lost a powerful advocate at the top of government after Energy and Climate Change Secretary Chris Huhne resigned – and saw him replaced by an unknown quantity in the form of Ed Davey.

Davey, formerly a minister in the UK's Business Department, was promoted into the role of energy supremo after Huhne quit the government when criminal charges were brought against him.

Davey's political boss, Liberal Democrat party leader Nick Clegg, claims the new Energy Secretary has a "lifelong commitment" to the environment and green issues.

The 46-year-old has a background in finance and is seen as being on the right wing of the Liberal Democrats, the minority party in the UK's ruling coalition.

He inherits an in-tray from Huhne that includes ambitious offshore wind targets,
