Algonquin cancels planned $83m First Wind investment

Algonquin Power and Utilities has dropped a bid to purchase a 12% stake for $83m in First Wind Holdings’ 370MW wind portfolio in the eastern US, citing delays in winning approval from regulators in Maine.

Algonquin’s partner Emera , parent of electric utility Nova Scotia Power, says it will now make that investment in addition to $250m pledged earlier to acquire 37% of seven wind projects: four in Maine, two in New York State and one in Vermont.

The two companies had formed a joint venture to control 49% of the wind assets through a new operating company JV Holdco.
