E.ON blasts into Brazilian renewables with $471m MPX deal

German utility giant E.ON will secure a foothold in the South American renewables sector by taking a 10% stake in Brazil’s MPX Energia and setting a up a joint venture to develop projects.

E.ON and MPX – the energy arm of EBX group, which is controlled by billionaire Eike Batista – plan to build 20GW of renewable and fossil-fuel generation capacity across Brazil and Chile.

That would make their 50/50 joint-venture company the largest private energy group in Brazil, says E.ON.

This is E.ON’s first move into Brazil, a target growth market for the German group, which says it has agreed to invest about R$850m ($471m) to gain its minority holding in MPX.
