In Depth: Leader of tiny Curaçao has big plans for renewables

Gerrit Schotte, Curaçao’s bold young prime minister, pushed through a new energy policy this year within four months of taking office.

His aggressive targets include having renewable sources comprise 70% of the power mix within five years, and he has offered to finance projects.

By April, expansion at existing wind farms should see renewables representing 20% of energy supply in the tiny Caribbean country, which has an installed capacity of 150MW. Schotte is looking to natural gas to help complete the target, and has a slightly unusual take on the subject.
