ATS scaling back production at troubled Photowatt France

Canada’s ATS Automation Tooling Systems says it will begin cutting hours for the 442 employees left at its Photowatt France subsidiary, only days after admitting that recent negotiations to offload the troubled company have failed.

ATS has been implementing a restructuring programme at Photowatt France intended to jolt the company back to a position of competitiveness.

Despite nearly halving its headcount in just two years, however, Photowatt France remains an albatross around its parent company’s neck.

ATS says it will reduce workers’ hours so that the factory in Bourgoin-Jallieu – near Lyon, in southeastern France – is running at just one-third of its production capacity.

Some 90% of the workforce will be asked to take off between five and 30 days in November and December.
