'Green war' in UK coalition as Huhne blasts critics

The UK’s Liberal Democrat energy secretary, Chris Huhne, has launched an outspoken attack on some of his Conservative coalition partners over their lack of support for renewables.

Huhne accuses an “unholy alliance of short-termists, armchair engineers, climate sceptics and vested interests” of selling the UK economy short by failing to recognise the economic benefits of clean-energy.

Senior Conservatives – including Chancellor George Osborne, the UK’s finance minister – have voiced concern that green initiatives are “piling costs on the energy bills of households and companies”.

Huhne’s hardline support for renewables is understood to have upset many Conservatives, the biggest party in the coalition government currently running the UK.
