Philippines wind industry is poised for a feed-in frenzy

Wind developers in the Philippines are getting hundreds of megawatts of projects ready, in antici­pation of a feed-in tariff (FIT) expected next month.

If the long-awaited renewables FITs are released as scheduled by 16 October, the country is ­likely to become the region’s biggest wind market, despite having only one 33MW project installed so far.

“It is probably the country in Southeast Asia with the biggest wind potential, followed by Vietnam,” says Knud Hedeager, chief opera­ting officer at Alternergy, a ­Manila-based wind developer.

The Philippines passed its ­ Renewable Energy Act in 2008, pledging strong support for wind and other renewable sources. However, it has yet to offer any subsidies for renewables.
