US renewable energy subsidies reached $14.7bn in 2010

The US government provided $14.67bn in energy-specific subsidies and other direct financial support to wind, solar and other renewables in fiscal year 2010, a 186% increase from $5.12bn in fiscal year 2007, according to an Energy Department report.

Biofuels received $6.64bn last year, the most federal assistance within the renewables sector, up 66.4% from $3.99bn in 2007. Wind was next with $4.98bn, more than a 10-fold increase from $476m. Solar and biomass received $1.11bn each, versus $179m and $61m respectively.

Geothermal received$273m compared with $14m in 2007, while hydro got $216m against $170m. Other renewables obtained $302m, up from $224m in 2007.

EIA reports that oil and gas subsidies last year were $2.82bn versus $2.01bn in 2007, $1.35bn for coal against $1.94bn, and $2.49bn for nuclear compared with $1.71bn.
