US auto giant General Motors is expanding into solar energy with a $7.5m investment in Sunlogics, a vertically-integrated systems provider which develops and installs projects.

The investment by GM unit General Motors Ventures will help provide funding for Sunlogics to establish a corporate headquarters and manufacturing facility in Detroit, and also set up a manufacturing plant in Ontario.

GM also signed commercial deals with Sunlogics for the installation of solar charging canopies at Chevrolet dealerships and large-scale arrays at GM facilities, including agreements to purchase power produced by them.

The auto group is committing to double its solar output globally from 30MW today at its sites to 60MW by the end of 2015.
