JA secures wafer supply with $180m Solar Silicon Valley deal

Wafer processing: JA says move will more than double its internal wafer capacity

JA Solar is to buy wafer maker Solar Silicon Valley for $180m, a move aimed at securing a supply of monocrystalline wafers as it looks to boost its output of high-efficiency cells.

Solar Silicon Valley, which is currently 70%-owned by a group controlled by JA chairman Baofang Jin, has 485MW of capacity at its factory in Hebei province, China.

The acquisition will more than double JA’s internal wafer capacity to 785MW. However, with 3GW of cell capacity expected online by the end of the year it will still rely heavily on its principal wafer supplier, GCL-Poly.

JA is the world’s largest supplier of PV cells to external customers, having surpassed rivals such as Q-Cells in recent years.
