Australia moves to cool rooftop PV with faster subsidy cuts

Australia's Climate Change Minister Greg Combet is making faster, deeper cuts to the federal government’s domestic rooftop solar subsidy scheme and phasing it out earlier than expected.

The federal Solar Credits Scheme is based on Renewable Energy Certificates and a payment multiplier system, currently set at a level of five, for homeowners installing PV.

Last December the government announced a reduction to four with effect from July of this year. But the multiplier will now fall to three from that date, before reducing further to two next year and being phased out altogether in 2013.

The scheme, which was launched in 2008, was previously due to run to 2015.
