Orkla: Elkem sale means REC no longer immediately up for sale

Orkla is no longer actively seeking to sell its stake in Norwegian PV manufacturer REC, according to chairman and largest shareholder Stein Erik Hagen.

On 11 January Oslo-based Orkla agreed to sell most of its materials subsidiary, Elkem, including its solar division, to China’s Bluestar for $2bn in cash.

It is one of the largest ever industrial acquisitions by a Chinese group in Europe, and includes Elkem’s polysilicon foundry plant at Kristiansand, Norway, which is capable of making 6,000 tonnes of PV-grade polysilicon per year.

Orkla, a highly diversified conglomerate, owns nearly 40% of REC, which is one of the world’s largest makers of PV wafers.
