New consortium revives Severn Barrage tidal scheme

British engineering consultancy Halcrow is leading a new consortium that aims to take forward development of the stalled Severn Barrage tidal energy project, after the UK government decided to drop its support for a £21bn ($33.4bn) power generation scheme in the channel between England and Wales.

Corlan Hafren, a private company including partners Ove Arup & Partners, KPMG, Sancroft International, Marks Barfield Architects, Hannah & Mould Solicitors and Professor Roger Falconer, believes it can deliver the long-mulled development without drawing significantly on public funds.

The outfit, whose names is Welsh for Severn Group, has published a plan for a Severn Barrage that would span from Lavernock Point to Brean Down. The plant would meet over 5% of the UK’s energy needs, while representing “a significant step” towards meeting the country’s 2020 and 2050 carbon reduction targets.
