First Irena boss Hélène Pelosse unexpectedly quits

Hélène Pelosse, the first head of the Abu Dhabi-based International Renewable Energy Agency (Irena), has unexpectedly resigned, as the fledgling organisation faces serious budgetary shortfalls for next year.

Her move heaps further uncertainty onto Irena’s future, which was founded last year after decades of uphill struggle by a handful of European renewables pioneers.

In an e-mailed statement outlining the agenda for next week’s preparatory committee in Abu Dhabi, Irena says: “Following the departure of the current interim director general, Hélène Pelosse, a new interim director general will be nominated.”

Last week, at the 11th hour, Pelosse dropped out of the line-up of speakers at the Masdar-sponsored European Future Energy Forum (EFEF) in London, offering no explanation.
