UK launches sweeping review of transmission charging regime

British energy regulator Ofgem launched a review of whether the current regime for charging access to the country’s main power and gas networks is suitable for supporting the move to a low-carbon energy sector.

The work is needed most urgently to address issues around renewable power generation, although Ofgem is also interested in views about gas networks.

“Britain is facing an unprecedented challenge as it moves to a low-carbon energy system and new kinds of generators such as wind and wave power stations have less flexibility on where they are sited,” Ofgem says.

Ofgem chief executive Alistair Buchanan suggests the review, known as Project TransmiT, may alter the way current costs are allocated.
