Bipartisan Senate bill would mandate a 15% RES by 2021

A bill introduced in the US Senate would require electric utilities to boost the amount of energy they generate from renewable sources to 15% in 2021.

Under the proposal, utilities would have to produce at least 11% of their power from biomass, geothermal, solar, wind and other clean energy sources, and could cover the remaining 4% through energy efficiency improvements.

Exempt are utilities selling less than 4 million megawatt hours a year.

The legislation is co-sponsored by Democratic Senators Jeff Bingaman and Tom Udall of New Mexico, his cousin Mark Udall of Colorado and Byron Dorgan of North Dakota.

Republican co-sponsors are Sam Brownback of Kansas, Susan Collins of Maine and John Ensign of Nevada.
