A group of Democratic and Republican US senators will introduce a bill Tuesday that would create a national renewable electricity standard (RES) starting in 2012.

The legislation will be co-sponsored by Senators Jeff Bingaman , a New Mexico Democrat; Sam Brownback , a Kansas Republican, and possibly Susan Collins, a Maine Republican. Democrat Tom Udall, the other New Mexico senator, and Democrat Byron Dorgan of North Dakota, may also sign on.

As reported by Recharge, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid , a Nevada Democrat, changed his mind over the summer recess and now wants to have a floor vote this year on legislation that would include a RES.
