Oklahoma adopts 15% RPS goal by 2015 and will expand grid

Oklahoma Governor Brad Henry has signed legislation that sets a 15% renewable portfolio standard goal by 2015, and requires the legislature and regulators to develop a state transmission grid expansion plan.

The bill allows electricity generators to utilize energy efficiency in order to meet the goal.

To maximize development of Oklahoma’s cleaner burning natural gas, the bill also sets a natural gas energy standard, declaring it to be the preferred fuel for electricity generation. The state is partly dependant on coal for power.

“This legislation advances our nation’s energy security, improves the environment and enhances Oklahoma’s economic development potential,” Henry says.
