South African minister touted as replacement for UN's de Boer

The race to replace Yvo de Boer at the head of the UN’s climate-change secretariat is hotting up, with candidates from South Africa, India and Indonesia all being touted by their governments.

South African President Jacob Zuma made the latest splash, throwing his weight behind the country’s tourism minister Marthinus van Schalkwyk, who led South Africa’s environment and tourism ministry until the department was split in May 2009.

Zuma says van Schalkwyk has gained respect for his work bridging the developing-developed country divide, while catapulting South Africa into a position of global leadership on the climate issue.
