Chinese developers ‘reach breaking point’ with CDM board

The bust-up between the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) executive board and developers of Chinese wind projects has reached breaking point. It is feared that the row could cause irreparable harm to Beijing’s relationship with — and involvement in — the CDM.

Tempers flared between developers and CDM board members during the Carbon Market Insights conference in Amsterdam this week, with developers lashing out at “smoke-filled hallways” or the “black box” in which they claim the CDM operates.

In a rare public response, former and current members of the CDM board have pushed back, saying that developers have only themselves to blame for the rejections.

Since early last year, the board has increasingly turned down applications for wind farms in China, which is by far the largest CDM participant.
