Favourites await EU's CCS cash handouts

The starting pistol for Europe's first large-scale carbon capture and storage (CCS) projects will be fired in the next few weeks when the recipients of €3bn ($4.4bn) in funding under the EU's economic stimulus package are confirmed.

The projects will each be given €180m (except for Italy's, which will get €100m), well short of the €1bn each will cost. Member states and companies will together have to foot half of the bill. Another €6bn-€9bn will be available from the EU to finance up to 12 CCS projects through the auctioning of 300 million EU emissions allowances (EUAs), but this package has been delayed by wrangling between member states and the European Commission (EC).
