Huge solar potential in deserts and mountains, says senator

New Mexico's vast desert and mountain regions possess abundant renewable-energy resources, the state's politicians claim.

In a speech to a joint session of the state legislature, Senator Tom Udall cited southern Luna County, on the border with Texas, as a location with "massive untapped potential for solar energy".

Democrat Udall says the US needs a Renewable Energy Standard (RES). The state's senior senator, Jeff Bingaman, who is chairman of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, has drafted legislation for a 4% RES within two years, rising to 8% by 2015, 12% by 2018, 16% by 2020 and 20% after then.
