Martifer and Hirschfield to make US wind turbine parts

Portuguese renewable-energy and construction group Martifer has formed a joint venture with US steel infrastructure-manufacturing company Hirschfield Industries to produce components for wind turbines in the US.

The joint venture, which will be named Martifer-Hirschfeld Energy Systems, will develop a factory in San Angelo, Texas, for the production of steel towers for wind turbine generators. The two companies will invest about $40m in the new plant, which will create around 225 jobs, Martifer says.

The first stage, with $30m investments, will be completed in the second quarter of 2010. The second stage will be completed in 2013, when the plant reaches a capacity of 400 towers per year.
