Oceanteam withdraws from subsea-cable laying

Cash-strapped Oceanteam is to stop laying the subsea cable for its offshore projects — one of its core business areas — after a string of loss-making ventures in the sector.

Oceanteam, which was one of just three companies installing power cables to link Europe’s offshore wind farms to onshore electrical grids, will now retreat to the “lower-risk” activity of merely chartering out its fleet of support vessels.

The Norwegian company will liquidate its two Aberdeen-based divisions — Oceanteam Power & Umbilical and Oceanteam Subsea Services — as part of its restructuring strategy. The move is likely to leave a number of UK offshore-support firms with unpaid bills, industry sources say.
