France was handed a 20% renewables target by the European Commission, but unilaterally upped its goal to 23% in a bid to galvanise its domestic industry.
In order to cross that threshold the country will need to produce 36 million tonnes of oil equivalent (Mtoe) from renewables by 2020, up from 16Mtoe in 2005.
However, at its current pace it will only get to 29Mtoe by the end of the decade, according to trade body Syndicat
