They have until 14 June to submit applications to the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (BPU).
"The wind power movement is providing us with a unique opportunity to advance energy as industry," says Governor Chris Christie, a Republican, who has been a strong supporter of commercial offshore wind development.
"By doing so, we have the ability to leverage our tremendous resources with ground-breaking technologies, allowing New Jersey to increase its use of renewable energy sources while advancing an industry that will lead to long term job creation," he adds.
