The NorthConnect project company was formed last year by five partners, including the Scottish and Swedish utilities SSE and Vattenfall.

The proposed 1.4GW link would run for 600km between Peterhead, Scotland, and Samnanger, Norway, with environmental assessments already under way in both countries.

The developers hope to bring the interconnector into service by 2020.

On a visit to Norway – one of his nation's most important trading partners – Salmond called NorthConnect an “excellent example” of the next generation of interconnector projects needed to balance out the vast amounts of variable renewable-energy generators due to come online in Scotland over the next decade.

NorthConnect would be a huge boon to Scotland’s ambitions to become an exporter of renewable electricity.
