UK's Mimer to bring geothermal to Rhode Island community

UK developer Mimer Energy has inked a joint-venture agreement with a town in Rhode Island, US, to build a geothermal power plant as the lead-off project in a £10m ($15.3m) community-scale renewables development.

The deal will see Cornwall-based Mimer provide 5MW of geothermal heating and cooling for businesses and municipal buildings in West Warwick, 50 miles south of Boston.

The project will eventually include wind, solar and hydropower installations

Mimer will operate the renewable energy infrastructure for 15-20 years, after which it swill transfer the assets to the local community as a micro-utility.

“West Warwick will become the first area in the US to use geothermal energy on a village scale,” Mimer chief executive Brian Kennelly says.
