Norway aims to kick-start global geothermal centre

The Norwegian group will develop drilling and well technology

A four-year project aimed at developing new geothermal technology has been kick-started with NKr24m ($4m) from the Research Council of Norway.

The NEXT-Drill project, which will be coordinated by Norwegian research institute Sintef, will use the money to test well and drilling technology.

The group hopes to become a global centre of expertise in the technology for both conventional- and deep-geothermal applications.

It will be supported by researchers from Trondheim science and technology university NTNU, the International Research Institute of Stavanger and the University of Stavanger.
