Kenya's 300MW Lake Turkana project nears financial closure

The wind farm near Lake Turkana, a crocodile-infested UN World Heritage Site in the Great Rift Valley, will provide up to a fifth of Kenya's electricity supply

Kenya’s 300MW Lake Turkana project, Africa’s first utility-scale wind farm, will enter construction by the end of the year, according to the developer.

The news is a rapid reversal from where things stood just two weeks ago, when developer Lake Turkana Wind Power (LTWP) claimed construction would be pushed back until at least late 2013 due to a lack of support from the Kenyan government.

LTWP, a subsidiary of Dutch wind developer KP&P, says it has received a letter of support from Nairobi that will allow it to reach financial closure at the €617m ($867.7m) project within a few months and commence construction by December.
