GE busy oiling the wheels of change in the Middle East

Expectations of rapidly escalating energy demand in many Middle Eastern states and the region’s emerging environmentalism are slowly beginning to reshape the role that renewables are likely to play in supplying power to the oil-rich nations.

Progressive pledges by states such as Egypt have been made to source up to 20% of energy supplies from renewables inside the decade. However, it is the economics of meeting exponential increases in demand that will drive the take-up of green technologies, says GE’s chief executive for the Middle East and Africa, Nabil Habayeb.
