Masdar to build Middle East's largest wind and PV farms

Masdar has begun accepting construction bids for two projects set to become the Middle East’s largest wind farm and PV array.

It intends to build a 20-30MW wind farm on Sir Bani Yas island off the western coast of Abu Dhabi, where since 2009 a single Vestas turbine has been spinning.

“We are evaluating bids from international companies who want to help us build the plant,” says Frank Wouters, director of Masdar’s project-development arm.

Though not considered particularly promising for wind energy, Wouters says the UAE’s wind speeds are “moderate but still sufficient” for such a project.
