Large-scale landfill gas project unveiled

The prime minister of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, has formally unveiled one of the world's largest landfill gas-to-energy projects, developed as part of a national initiative to reduce the environmental impacts of solid-waste facilities.



LONDON: The project, owned by Ortadogu Enerji Sanayi ve Ticaret, will use the landfills' gas to generate electricity.

When the facility begins full operation in 2010, the nearly 35-megawatt project will produce enough renewable energy to support the monthly requirements of approximately 100,000 average households in Istanbul. Located at two landfill sites in Istanbul - in the areas of Odayeri and Komurcuoda - the new renewable-energy plants will be powered by a total of 23 of General Electric's Jenbacher landfill-gas engines.
