Abu Dhabi bid attracts support

Developing countries are lining up to support Abu Dhabi's bid to host the headquarters of the newly established International Renewable Energy Agency (Irena) in Masdar, its zero-carbon city, which is currently under construction.

Middle East: In the past week, officials from Singapore, Vietnam, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal have thrown their weight behind Abu Dhabi's bid, saying it would be a symbolically significant way of promoting renewable energy in developing countries. Indonesia, which says it is in discussions to join Irena, has also lent its support.

The UAE, which submitted its official application last week, is competing with Germany, Spain and The Netherlands.

Irena's 78 signatories will meet in Egypt at the end of June to vote on the site of the headquarters.
