Areva targets compact, low-cost plants for small-scale biomass

French power technology group Areva plans to develop small-scale biomass plants that can be deployed more quickly and easily.

The company says new modular, compact plants could exploit relatively untapped potential in Europe, south Asia and Latin America.

Areva wants to reduce cost and construction time while allowing the plants to use a greater range of biomass fuels.

The French group is part of a consortium working on the project, which has received funding support from European technology incubator KIC InnoEnergy.

Other consortium partners include waste treatment giant SITA and Germany’s Karlsruhe Institute of Technology.
