Lawrence Berkeley lab to build DOE advanced biofuels facility

The US Energy Department has designated its Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory to build an advanced biofuels process development facility that will aim to speed commericialization by allowing researchers and private sector to test and integrate innovative technologies.

“The Department is committed to developing cost-effective and sustainable advanced biofuels,” says Cathy Zoi, assistant secretary for energy efficiency and renewable energy. “With this investment, we will vastly increase the capacity to test new innovative approaches on a larger, integrated scale.”

The Advanced Biofuels Process Development Unit (PDU) facility will be funded with nearly $18m from the 2009 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. It is scheduled to become fully operational by early 2011. Various sites are under consideration in the San Francisco East Bay region.
