Peru to complete first green tender and go for seconds

Peru is expected to contract additional biomass and solar power to complete a mandate that was not fulfilled by its first renewable-energies tender in February, Recharge has learned. The South American country is also expected to hold a second full renewables tender in 2011.

In February, Peru had hoped to contract an installed capacity of 500 megawatts (MW), or 1.3 terawatt hours a year, but closed deals for just 249.4MW, or 887 gigawatt hours (GWh).

Biomass was a particular problem area — despite high expectations, as it was perceived to be cheaper than wind or solar. But just 27.4MW, or 143GWh, were sold, although 813GWh had been required.

Some 80MW, or 173GWh, of solar-photovoltaic energy was sold — 96% of the 181GWh required — but wind excelled with 142MW, or 571GWh, sold — more than twice the Log in to read complete article.
