Automotive leaders call for boost to synthetic fuels

Leaders from the fuel and automotive industries in Brussels for EU Sustainable Energy Week called on Europe to make more funds available for research into synthetic fuels for transport.

Synthetic fuels for transport can have a significant impact on the level of pollutants vehicles emit, but are unlikely to have a major impact on carbon emissions until synthetic fuels made from biomass become more widely available, they say.

Synthetic fuels can be made from natural gas (gas-to-liquids, or GTL), coal (CTL) and biomass (BTL). They can be used today in existing vehicles. But before they gain widespread traction, barriers need to be overcome in terms of development and deployment.

“As an alternative fuel option, synthetic fuels are a compelling solution,” said Wolfgang…
