The fire at the Tilbury plant – the UK’s largest dedicated biomass facility – was tackled by 120 officers from Essex Fire and Rescue Service.
The RWE-operated facility was shut down after the fire broke out at 0745 in a hopper storing up to 6,000 tonnes of biomass fuel.
Incident commander David Johnson described the blaze as among the most challenging fires he has dealt with in a 20-year career because of the technical complexities involved, and said foam instead of water had been used to fight it.
