Asian green power-sharing plan remains gridlocked

Politics may wreck visions of a regional electricity network, reports Lee Hong Liang in Singapore

Reliable transmission lines and power sharing between countries will become imperative as Southeast Asia looks to generate more electricity from renewables, observers say.

A smarter grid is needed to revolutionise the region's current uni-directional transmission system to create an intelligent platform that is able to handle both large- and small-scale variable renewable sources.

"I see a scenario where Southeast Asia can build one grid system, and it is not a big problem," Håkan Johansson, an ABB contracts manager for smart-grid systems, tells Recharge.
