The contract was awarded by Fisterra Energy, which is majority owned by funds managed by Blackstone, the US private equity group, and Cemex, the Mexico-based global cement giant.
Acciona will start EPC work at the Ventika 1 and 2 plants later this year in the municipality of General Bravo, Nuevo Leon state.
The wind farms will need a total investment of $650m,
They will use 84 of Acciona Windpower’s AW/116 3000 3MW
turbines, with commercial operation likely by Q2 2016. Acciona will then provide
O&M services for 20 years.
The deal is a big boost for Acciona in one of the world’s
wind power hotspots.
Installed wind capacity in Mexico ended 2013 at 1.9GW, up 600MW, or almost 50% in one year, according to figures from the Global Wind Energy Council.
Acciona said it expects to sign deals for 615MW of the AW/116
3000 this year, including the Mexico order and 363MW currently under
negotiation for wind farms in Brazil.
