Ivanpah solar project achieves 'first flux'

BrightSource Energy reports that on Monday the Ivanpah solar plant under construction achieved the “first flux” when more than 1,000 heliostats focused onto the Unit 1 solar receiver and heated the water inside the boiler to just below the point of steam generation.

The boiler is located on one of the three solar towers that the 377MW project will employ. The receivers will generate steam to drive specially adapted turbines and produce electricity.

“First flux essentially demonstrates operational readiness of the project” says Mike Bobinecz, vice president construction management at BrightSource Energy.  “After years of planning, engineering, manufacturing and construction, we are entering the final stage of start-up of the equipment and systems.
