In depth: Picking winners over three decades in wind

Three decades in the wind business have taught developer Cannon Power Group to be flexible and deliberate, riding out past downturns in the US by finding opportunities abroad.

Gerald Monkhouse started the business “with the big bang of the wind industry in California back in the late 1970s”, Gary Hardke tells Recharge. At the time, Hardke was a junior lawyer at a large San Diego legal firm called in to advise on leases in the Tehachapi Pass area, where Cannon developed projects throughout the 1980s.

“The industry was a start-up. The company was a start-up. Nobody had ever done it before,” says Hardke, who became president and co-principal with Monkhouse in 1999.
