US Energy Department winds down $2.4bn loan scheme

The US Department of Energy (DOE) Loan Guarantee Program (LGP), which has begun churning out deals at pace this year, is winding down its main renewables scheme.

Section 1705 — under which the government agrees to repay lenders to renewables projects should developers be unable to meet their obligations — expires on 30 September.

So far, 19 projects have been issued loan guarantees or conditional commitments under 1705. The government backing allows access to financing sources at interest rates that otherwise would not be available.

It also serves as an endorsement of technologies with a limited record of commercial deployment.
