Tres Amigas SuperStation would unite US grids

A transmission hub in New Mexico connecting the three huge, separate US grids would benefit renewable energy generators through greater access to the nation’s markets, project proponents say.

New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson, a former US Energy Secretary, is to announce the project, proposed by private developers Tres Amigas LLC at a news conference Tuesday morning.

There are three distinct and mostly separate grids covering the US, as well as parts of Canada and Mexico: The Western Interconnection, which includes states from the Rocky Mountains to the Pacific Ocean; The Eastern Interconnection, including the Great Plains and all points east; and the Texas Interconnect, confined to most, but not all, of Texas.
