Long Island offshore wind farm plan floated out

Con Edison and Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) are advocating Atlantic Ocean wind power as a partial solution for sky-high electricity costs in the New York City region.

The utilities, which serve millions of consumers in Long Island, New York City and Westchester County north of there, are studying the feasibility of locating a wind farm 13 miles (21km) in the ocean.

The proposal calls for 350 megawatts (MW) of initial generation, with the ability to expand nameplate capacity to 700MW. Con Edison and LIPA estimate that a 350MW wind farm operating at 30% capacity would generate about 920,000 megawatt-hours a year, enough energy to power more than 250,000 homes.
