California sets 2010 for new low-carbon fuel standard

California has adopted the first state low-carbon fuel standard (LCFS) that will require a 10% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from motor fuels by 2020.

The measure, drawn up in an executive order by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger in early 2007, was adopted by California Air Resources Board (CARB) despite sharp criticism from the state’s ethanol and oil industries.

It takes effect 1 January 2010.

“The new standard means we can begin to break our century-old dependence on petroleum and provide California with greater energy security,’’ says Mary D. Nichols, chairman of CARB.

She estimates that the new LCFS will reduce California's dependency on oil by 20%.
